The South Carolina Gamecocks women's basketball team dominated the Arkansas Razorbacks 92-46 in a historic game at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, SC, on Jan. 22, 2023. Senior forward Aliyah Boston recorded her 73rd double-double, the most in Gamecock women's basketball history, and the Gamecocks are now 8-0 in the SEC, having defeated every opponent they've faced this Â鶹Сòòò½´«Ã½.
Students gathered for a protest against "racist culture" at Â鶹Сòòò½´«Ã½ on Jan. 20, 2023. The protest began at the McKissick Museum on the Horseshoe and ended on Greene Street with students rallying outside Russell House Student Union to share their experiences. Courtney McClain, a fourth-year broadcast journalism student and activist, organized the protest after a TikTok video of an individual claiming to be a Â鶹Сòòò½´«Ã½ student and repeatedly saying an anti-Black racial slur went viral last week. The university has confirmed that said individual is not a Â鶹Сòòò½´«Ã½ student.
Over the past few years, students have been advocating for the renaming of several campus buildings. The Heritage Act of 2000 was made in response to the Confederate buildings facing a potential renaming. The dilemma at hand is that the university is a state institution. If the school attempts to override the state legislature, it could lose its state funding. The main buildings in question are Strom Thurmond Wellness and Fitness Center, Thomas Cooper Â鶹Сòòò½´«Ã½, Blatt P.E. Center, Sims College and the Wade Hampton State Office Building.
The Tennessee Volunteers men’s basketball team dominated South Carolina 85-42 on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2022. The Gamecocks are now 0-2 in the SEC, having lost to Vanderbilt earlier in the week. Even with good performances from graduate forward Hayden Brown and sophomore guard Meechie Johnson to keep South Carolina competitive, the Volunteers controlled the ball for most of the game and held a hefty lead on the Gamecocks.
South Carolina started out the SEC Â鶹Сòòò½´«Ã½ with a 76-34 win against the Texas A&M Aggies. The Gamecocks quickly took charge with a a 24-6 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. This game marks the team's first conference win of the Â鶹Сòòò½´«Ã½ and its 13th win overall.
The Gamecocks defeated rival Clemson 31-30 in the Palmetto Bowl after a competitive game. The Palmetto Bowl marks the end of regular Â鶹Сòòò½´«Ã½ for both teams and leads to the playoffs. The marked the first time the Gamecocks have beaten the Tigers since November 2013 and snapped Clemson's 40-game home winning streak.
The University of South Carolina held its annual Tiger Burning ceremony at the Bluff Road Intermural Field on Nov. 21, 2022. The Â鶹Сòòò½´«Ã½ American Society of Mechanical Engineers and Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers constructed the 32.5-foot-tall Clemson Tiger statue that was burned in preparation for the Â鶹Сòòò½´«Ã½-Clemson Rivalry game on Nov. 26, 2022. The Voyage of Life exhibition combines sculptures from Christopher Mahonski and Eli Kessler. These sculptures are created using a wide range of processes and techniques, like metal fabrication and woodworking. These processes are combined with biological specimens and geological forms to expose the tensions between ecological and socio-cultural developments. South Carolina upset No. 5 Tennessee 63-38 in the Gamecocks final home game of the Â鶹Сòòò½´«Ã½ on Nov. 19, 2022. Fans flooded the field after the dominant victory that saw junior quarterback Spencer Rattler throw for a career high 438 yards and six touchdowns. With the win, the Gamecocks improve to 7-4 on the Â鶹Сòòò½´«Ã½.
The Marty & McGee and SEC Nation pregame show came to the Horseshoe on Nov. 19, 2022. The shows featured interviews with South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer, red shirt junior quarterback Spencer Rattler and other guests from across the SEC and from the University of South Carolina.
The South Carolina women's soccer team beat Wake Forest 2-0 in their first match of the NCAA Tournament. Junior forward Cat Barry and fifth year defender Jyllissa Harris scored both goals for the Gamecocks. The Gamecocks men's club volleyball team hosted a home tournament at Upward Star Volleyball Center on Nov. 12, 2022. Kennesaw State, University of Georgia, Coastal Carolina, University of Elon, College of Charleston, University of North Carolina Charlotte and Upward Star Club played the three Gamecocks club teams in pool and tournament play. The Gamecocks' three feature teams were the A team, the Garnet team and the Black team. The A team went 6-0 in pool play, but fell to the Star Club team in the Gold Bracket final. The Garnet team went 3-3 in pool play, and after a strong start against Coastal Carolina A, they fell just short in the first round of the Gold Bracket. As for the Black team, they went 5-1 in pool play, with their only loss being a split against Georgia A. In tournament play they saw a strong 25-20 win against UNCC A, but in a match against their own A team, fell short in a 2-0 match loss. Gamecock men's club volleyball see 3-5 tournaments in their Fall offÂ鶹Сòòò½´«Ã½, and compete in ECVA matches throughout the Spring.
South Carolina had an intense matchup with in-state rival Clemson on Friday Nov. 11, 2022. Senior guard Chico Carter secured the win for the Gamecocks with a buzzer beating shot to end the game. With the 60-58 win, South Carolina is now 2-0 in head coach Lamont Paris' first Â鶹Сòòò½´«Ã½.
In a highly anticipated matchup between rivals, the South Carolina club hockey team powered past a tough Clemson defense to pull out a nail-biting 5-4 victory. The game featured a number of stops from senior goalie Liam Gormley that played a crucial role keeping the Tigers at bay. "The South Carolina baseball team held a series of intrasquad scrimmages in preparation of its upcoming spring Â鶹Сòòò½´«Ã½. The Garnet and Black World Series saw the roster split into two teams for a best-of-three series in front of small crowds as the players look towards their Â鶹Сòòò½´«Ã½ beginning in February. The afternoon scrimmages were held on Nov. 2, 3 and 5 and featured both new and returning players.
The South Carolina volleyball team went up against Ole Miss during a weekend tournament from Nov. 5 to Nov. 6, 2022. The Gamecocks began the weekend with a 3-1 loss after four hard-fought sets.
