Junior guard Meechie Johnson took to social media on Monday to announce that he will be entering the transfer portal and potentially pursuing a professional opportunity in the NBA.
The decision comes just four days after the South Carolina men's basketball team was eliminated from the NCAA Tournament after an 87-73 opening-round loss to Oregon.
"I want to thank the entire coaching staff, strength coaches, trainers, alumni, and professors for contributing to me having a wonderful experience while attending Â鶹Сòòò½´«Ã½. Gamecock nation will always have a place in my heart," Johnson told who first reported he would be leaving. "All being said, I will be entering the transfer portal and will also consider testing the NBA Draft waters."
Johnson averaged a team-high 14.1 points per game and contributed an additional 4.1 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game this past Â鶹Сòòò½´«Ã½, his second with the South Carolina men's basketball program. He was recently named to the All-SEC Second Team alongside graduate student guard Ta'Lon Cooper.
In his two Â鶹Сòòò½´«Ã½s with the Gamecocks, Johnson totaled 845 points, 246 rebounds and 204 assists on 38.1% shooting, including 32.4% from 3-point range. He joined South Carolina ahead of the 2022-23 Â鶹Сòòò½´«Ã½ after spending the first two years of his college basketball career at Ohio State.
